Keyword Optimization - Part VII
(Selecting the right
keywords or key phrases for your business)
For example, if I own an website dealing with "Apartments for rent in Kansas City", I would like to find all the search
terms
that people used in the past to get to websites similar to mine.
I would also like to find out how popular each search phrase was, in
all the
major search engines.
For this example, I would go to the Wordtracker website, sign up and
pay for
one day of using their popular search finding tool, and have them email
me the
results.
I would then have an analysis of all the popular search terms used in
the near
past, the number of times it was used in the major search engines, and
the
number of competing websites that are of similar interest. I would then
have
decided on the following search phrases, as an example, which people
used in
the near past to find websites similar to mine.
"Apartments for rent in Kansas City"
"Renting in Kansas City"
"Leasing in Kansas City"
"Obtaining apartments in Kansas City"
"Places to stay in Kansas city" .
I would then optimize my pages for each of these search phrases.
The result, people searching for apartments for rent in Kansas City,
would most
probably be using one of the popular search terms, and have a good
chance of
coming to my website, via the major search engines.
One could decide on optimizing every page with as many search phrases
as
possible, or to optimize each page for a particular search phrase.
But one must also keep in mind the readability, usefulness and the
natural flow
of the page. And that it should not be disturbed.
The following may be the steps that one should take in deciding on the
search
phrases, that they should optimize their site on.
In my opinion, this is one of the most important steps, one takes in
making
their website visible and viable, on the internet.
Step 1: Decide on the area of one's business.
Step 2: Define a word or phrase, that can describe what one's website
is all
about.
Step 3: Go to Wordtracker (http://Wordtracker.com), and use their tool
to find
a good set of all the popular search terms used in the past few months,
that
people used, to find websites similar to one's.
Step 4: Optimize one's web pages based on the above search phrases
The first step Step 1 can be summarized, as one needs to have a fairly
good
idea of what one's website is going to be.
This is important, as one needs to know for sure, on which area of
interest,
their website should be on, in order to constructively build it.
This is because, the internet, is no longer, the nascent medium, where
curiosity seekers were abound.
The internet is now a competitive place, as competitive as the outside
world.

And to succeed in it, one must think for the long term, and must have a
good
idea of what one's website should be about.
The second step Step 2 can be summarized, as if one could assign a word
or
phrase to describe one's website.
This would be useful for finding all the popular search phrases, in
Wordtracker.
If we type a word to describe one's website, in the Wordtracker tool,
it would
give us a lot of similar popular search terms used in search engines.
For example a word like "Astrology", could give us similar words like
"horoscope", "horoscopes", "charts",
"readings", and more, as links.
We need to click on each link to find the popular search phrases used
in the
past.
The third step Step 3 can be summarized, as follows.
We need to use a tool like Wordtracker, to find all the popular search
terms
that people used in the near past, in the major search engines.
One could start off with their trial version, but if one is serious
about the
long term prospects and viability of their website, then they should
try the
paid version and get a good analysis of all the popular key phrases,
that they
could use.
It would definitely be a good idea to use their paid trial for one day,
as the
cost is nominal, and as one could exhaustively try and get the
best
search terms, for the particular line of interest of their website.
A small price to pay for something this important.
For, no matter, how good one's website is, if it not optimized for the
right key
phrases, not much good can come out of it, and all the time, effort and
money
would not bear the fruit, that one is awaiting for.
The fourth step Step 4, can be summarized as follows.
We must first decide on the popular key phrases we are going to use,
and then
optimize the website on the basis of it.
We could optimize all pages on all the key phrases, or one page for one
key
phrase.
Both these strategies are good, and would be fruitful in one's quest to
get
better rankings in the major search engines.
We must rewrite our content, using the strategies as described in the
other
articles on search engine optimization, in this site.
