The following are the general steps that one would take in optimizing their website, using the logic and scientific techniques of search engine optimization.
 

1. Find the right search words or search phrases for your business.
2. Choosing an optimized domain name for your business.
3. Web page title, meta tags, file and directory optimization.
4. Web page Content optimization.
5. Alternate text of Web page image, objects and links optimization.
6. Link building strategy.
7. Link managing and maintaining.

Optimizing individual pages in a website is only one part of search engine optimization.

The other part is to build a number of link relationships with quality websites.

This process is called reciprocal linking.

That is, we place a link to a website on our site, and the other site reciprocates by placing our link on their website.

This helps to show the net users and others, that we are a serious website, here for the long term, and on par with the quality websites we link to.

This also helps to build our credibility, with the net users and search engines.


Linking has another outcome.

Modern day advanced search engines like Google, determine your web page rank, using the, the number and quality of incoming links, as one of the basis.

This web page rank plays an important factor in determining your ranking among search results.

In order for one to have a good web page rank for all the pages in their site, and the site as a whole, one must strive to get a good number of links with quality websites.


Reciprocal linking has two advantages.

One is that you get a good page rank, which in turn increases your chances of getting a great deal more traffic, from the search engines.

The other advantage is that you also get traffic from your link partners.

People who visit their site, could also visit their link pages, and be directed towards your site, when they click on your link on their site.

This is an truly advantageous situation for both the link partners, as both of you can get traffic from each other.

If one has more than, say, a thousand link partners, who are reasonably heavy traffic sites, then one could get a lot of visitors through them, and be truly independent of the search engines.
