Keyword Optimization - Part V (filenames and directory optimization)

When it comes to optimizing one's file names and directory names to resemble popular key phrases, one must be careful.

With the incredible amount of keyword spamming being done on the internet, and with search engines always on the lookout for signs of it, it would be advisable to keep that to a minimum or none at all.

As this could have an adverse effect on one's optimization effort, with any search engine banning the entire website from its index.

Though this looks perfectly logical, it could be construed in the wrong, as someone trying to get more than they deserve. In this case, someone trying to get more credit, than they should for their content.

The search engines give the most importance to content, number and quality of incoming links, and to the page title, in that order.

And it would be difficult to presume that any search engine would give credence to anything else.

As the line between genuine search engine optimization and spamming would begin to blur, when we begin to optimize file names and directory names.

Which have nothing to do with the content of a particular web page, other than indicating its place in storage.

When it comes to images, we are ethically permitted to give a description to the image in the "alt" property of the "img" tag.

And that description could include any popular search term.

But one must take care, in not becoming over zealous, in optimizing them to the utmost, as this could have a negative impact with the search engines.

We could describe images as shown below.

We must keep in mind, that the description should be relevant to the image, and is useful to the user.

And then see if we could include any popular key phrase, while keeping it natural.

It is possible that some search engines may not like it, so in my opinion, I would not optimize images, and concentrate instead on doing a good job with my content, and the number and quality of incoming links.

And try to increase the number of pages with good content, so as to give value to my website in whole with the search engines.

In my opinion, this is more important, than trying to utilize, techniques, which may work in the short term, but definitely not in the longer term.

In my opinion, any SEO job, is basically a honest presentation of what is good in one's website, to the search engines, and not some  some cheap tricks, to influence a website's rankings in the search engines.

As this would be against the very fairness of the system, and would be resented by one and all.
